Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Financial Analysis FY26

Headline Numbers (₹ Cr)

  • Revenue: 7,002.16 (+37.95%)
  • EBITDA incl. other income: 1,069.69 (+41.47%)
  • PAT: 747.93 (+41.81%)
  • EPS: ₹65.29 vs ₹46.04

What Sits Beneath

Note 2 of the filing shows that revising cost and price estimates on the P17A, ASW-SWC and NGOPV projects added ₹62.62 Cr to profit, which is 6.2% of PBT. The auditor issued an Emphasis of Matter on this note. Without it, PBT growth is about 34%, not 42.9%.

Q4 alone produced 30.3% of revenue and 40.5% of PAT, so the year's earnings were concentrated in the last quarter. That is common for a shipbuilder that books revenue as work progresses and receives payment when projects hit milestones.

Expert Commentary on the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend

"FY26 marks a landmark year for GRSE wherein our robust physical performance has been translated into strong financial results. During the year, we delivered 08 warships, that means a ship every one & a half months." (Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), CMD, press release dated 28 April 2026)

ShareBazaar Online Read

The dividend follows a rule, not a whim. For three years in a row, GRSE has paid out almost exactly 30% of PAT, which matches the government's guideline that CPSEs distribute at least 30% of profit. Dividends therefore rise and fall with reported profit. The weak spot is what the profit is made of. In FY26, ₹747.93 Cr of profit came with negative operating cash flow of ₹289.72 Cr, so the cash for the dividend came from reserves.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Dividend Outlook

Supports

  • Order book of ₹15,324 Cr as of 31 March 2026, about 2.2x FY26 revenue (AGM disclosure)
  • Reported as L1 bidder for the Next Generation Corvette programme (Business Today, citing brokerages)
  • Q1 FY27 PAT of ₹173 Cr vs ₹120 Cr a year earlier (Screener.in)

Constraints

  • Other income is falling as bank deposits shrink
  • Cash depends on when the Navy pays at each milestone
  • Some FY26 profit came from one-off changes to project estimates

Because the payout ratio is fixed at about 30%, the FY27 dividend depends on FY27 profit. The company has made no guidance on dividends for FY27.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Dividend Yield

On Face Value (Headline)

Final / FY26 total, measured on the ₹10 face value

On Market Price (Reality)

0.30% / 0.87%

Final / FY26 total, at the CMP of ₹2,246 (28 Sep 2026)

Yield reality check: At announcement, the stock traded near ₹2,927.85 (Business Today, 28 Apr 2026), which gave a final-dividend yield of 0.23%. The yield has since risen to 0.30%. The dividend did not change. The share price fell 23.3%. A higher yield here is not a sign of better shareholder returns. A buyer at ₹2,246 earning the full ₹19.60 would get less than 1% before tax.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend Growth Over the Years

Growth

DPS rose from ₹5.00 (FY21) to ₹19.60 (FY26), a 31.4% CAGR. EPS grew at a 37.3% CAGR over the same years, so dividends grew slightly slower than profit.

Pattern

GRSE has made no cuts, skipped no years and paid no special dividends. The payout ratio has narrowed from 37.3% to a steady 30%.

Classification: Consistent Payer. The payout mix has changed, though. The final dividend's share of the annual total went from 11% in FY23 to 34% in FY26, and FY26 had two interims instead of one. GRSE now pays three times a year, which gives income investors cash more often.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend vs Profit Growth

MetricFY26 (₹ Cr)YoY
Revenue7,002.16+37.95%
Core EBITDA (excl. other income)795.30+88.79%
Other income274.39-18.05%
PAT747.93+41.81%

Operating leverage was strong. Core EBITDA margin rose from 8.30% to 11.36%, mainly because materials fell from 65.5% to 48.9% of revenue. Some costs moved elsewhere rather than disappearing: sub-contracting rose 144.5% and project-related expenses 169.8%. Other income fell from 47.6% to 27.3% of PBT, so profit now depends more on shipbuilding and less on treasury income.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Cash Flow Analysis

Red Flag: Profit Without Cash

  • PAT: ₹747.93 Cr
  • Operating cash flow: -₹289.72 Cr
  • Capex: ₹76.90 Cr
  • Free cash flow: -₹366.62 Cr

Where the Cash Went

  • Receivables: up ₹961.41 Cr (+370.5%), against 38% revenue growth
  • Debtor days: 18.7 to 63.6
  • Other current liabilities (largely customer advances): down ₹1,137.82 Cr

How the dividend was funded: from cash reserves. GRSE redeemed a net ₹357.14 Cr of fixed deposits and paid ₹203.90 Cr in dividends during FY26, which matches the computed FY25 final plus FY26 interims exactly. No borrowing was used.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Balance Sheet Strength

  • Cash + bank balances: ₹3,388.09 Cr (down ₹343.76 Cr)
  • Lease liabilities (only debt): ₹37.40 Cr
  • Net cash: ₹3,350.70 Cr
  • Cash per share: ₹295.77
  • Net worth: ₹2,626.12 Cr (+26.3%)
  • ROE (average equity): 31.79%
  • Debt-equity: 0.013x
  • Current ratio: 1.23x

The ₹3,388 Cr cash pile looks large, but much of it is not free. Other current liabilities of ₹5,768 Cr are mostly customer advances for ships still being built, and they will be used up as those ships are delivered. Treat the cash as working capital, not surplus.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Dividend Sustainability

TestFY26 ResultVerdict

OCF coverNegative (-₹289.72 Cr)Fail
FCF cover-1.63x of total outflowFail
Cash cover15.1x total / 44.1x finalPass

Verdict: Moderately Sustainable. The dividend passes on profit and on cash in the bank, but not on cash generated during the year. Cash flow at defence shipyards swings with Navy milestone payments. FY23 had OCF of +₹1,450 Cr and FY24 had -₹707 Cr (Screener.in). One weak year is not a trend, but a second year of negative cash flow would start to erode the reserves.

Source: Screener.in standalone data, prices as of 25–28 Sep 2026. GRSE yield and P/E computed at ₹2,246.

GRSE has the highest yield and ROCE in this group and the lowest P/E among the three shipyards. Negative operating cash flow was common across the sector in FY26. Mazagon Dock's outflow was nearly 10x larger, which suggests the Navy's payment timing was the main cause and not a GRSE-specific problem.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend: Promoter Impact Analysis

Government of India (74.50%)

  • Final dividend: ₹57.18 Cr
  • FY26 total: ₹167.27 Cr

Minority Holders (25.50%)

  • Final dividend: ₹19.57 Cr
  • FY26 total: ₹57.25 Cr

Three of every four rupees paid out go to the Union government. This explains the fixed 30% payout: CPSE dividend policy is set with the government's revenue needs in mind. Retail holders make up 20.36% of the equity, spread across about 3.99 lakh shareholders (June 2026). FII and DII holdings are small at 3.21% and 1.93%. Every shareholder receives the same amount per share.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend Taxation Analysis

This final dividend is paid in tax year 2026-27, so the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies. Dividends are taxed at your slab rate. The company deducts 10% TDS (Section 393(1), which replaced old Section 194) once it pays a resident more than ₹10,000 in dividends in the year, and a higher rate if no PAN is on record. Non-residents are taxed at 20%, subject to any applicable tax treaty. From 1 April 2026, interest paid on money borrowed to buy shares can no longer be deducted from dividend income.

Worked Example: 1,000 shares, ₹10/share, 30% slab

Gross dividend₹10,000
Tax @30% + 4% cess₹3,000 + ₹120
Net dividend₹6,880
Effective yield at ₹2,2460.445% pre-tax, 0.306% post-tax

₹10,000 does not exceed the threshold, so no TDS is deducted, but the full amount is still taxable. Surcharge ignored.

Key Risks to the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend

  • Cash conversion: operating cash flow was -₹289.72 Cr and receivables quadrupled to ₹1,220.87 Cr.
  • Estimate-driven profit: ₹62.62 Cr of PBT came from revised cost and price estimates, flagged by the auditor. Future revisions could go the other way.
  • Customer concentration: almost all revenue comes from the Navy and Coast Guard, so their budgets and payment schedules drive earnings.
  • Shrinking treasury income: other income fell 18.05% as deposits were drawn down.
  • Contingent liabilities of ₹7,959 Cr (Screener.in), about 3x net worth.
  • Valuation: the stock trades at 9.8x book, and it fell 23.3% after the announcement even though results were strong.

What To Monitor in Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited

  • H1 FY27 operating cash flow: a return to positive would show the FY26 shortfall was timing.
  • Receivable days: whether they come back down from 63.6 toward the FY25 level of 18.7.
  • NGC contract signing: reported as L1. A signed contract would bring in fresh customer advances.
  • FY27 interim dividend: announced alongside results in November or February, based on FY26 practice.
  • Core EBITDA margin: whether 11.4% holds without further estimate revisions.
  • Order-book replenishment above the ₹15,324 Cr level of March 2026.

Should You Consider Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers for Dividend Income?

Positives

  • 31.4% DPS CAGR over five years, with no cuts
  • Predictable 30% payout ratio
  • ₹3,351 Cr net cash
  • Highest ROCE among peers

Negatives

  • Yield below 1% at market price
  • Negative OCF and FCF in FY26
  • 6.2% of PBT from estimate revisions

The Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers dividend is best described as a steady 30% of profit that grows with the business. It is not a high-yield income stream. Whether it suits you depends on your own goals. FY27 cash flow will show whether the FY26 cash gap was a one-off.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Dividend

What dividend has Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers announced?
GRSE declared a final dividend of ₹6.70 per share for FY 2025-26, which is 67% of the ₹10 face value. With the interims of ₹5.75 and ₹7.15, the FY26 total is ₹19.60 per share. Shareholders approved it at the AGM on 25 September 2026.
What is the GRSE dividend yield?
At ₹2,246 (28 Sep 2026), the final dividend yields 0.30% and the full FY26 payout 0.87%. The "67%" and "196%" figures are measured on the ₹10 face value, not on the share price.
What was the GRSE final dividend record date?
Third-party corporate-action data lists 18 September 2026 as the record date. Check the NSE/BSE corporate-action circular for the official date. Shareholders whose names were on the register at the close of that day qualified.
What was the GRSE ex-dividend date?
18 September 2026, the same day as the record date, because India uses T+1 settlement. Shares bought on or after that date did not carry the ₹6.70 final dividend. Confirm the date against the exchange circular.
When will the GRSE final dividend be paid?
The company said it will pay within 30 days of declaration at the 110th AGM held on 25 September 2026, which means on or before 25 October 2026. It has not disclosed the exact date.
Who was eligible for the GRSE final dividend?
Shareholders whose names appeared in the register of members or the depository records as beneficial owners at the close of the record date. The dividend is paid to the bank account linked to their demat account.
How is the GRSE dividend taxed?
At your income-tax slab rate. GRSE deducts 10% TDS under Section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 when its dividends to you exceed ₹10,000 in the year. With 1,000 shares, the FY26 total of ₹19,600 is above that threshold.
Is the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers dividend sustainable?
We rate it Moderately Sustainable. EPS covers the dividend 3.33x and cash covers the full-year outflow 15.1x. But FY26 operating cash flow was -₹289.72 Cr, so bank deposits paid for the dividend, not cash generated during the year.
What is the GRSE dividend history?
DPS rose from ₹5.00 in FY21 to ₹5.80, ₹6.20, ₹9.36, ₹13.85 and then ₹19.60 in FY26, a 31.4% CAGR. There have been no cuts or special dividends since listing in 2018.
Why did GRSE's operating cash flow turn negative in FY26?

How much dividend does the Government receive from GRSE?
With a 74.50% stake, the Government of India gets ₹57.18 Cr from the final dividend and ₹167.27 Cr from the FY26 total of ₹224.52 Cr. Minority holders together receive ₹57.25 Cr.
What should GRSE investors monitor next?
Whether H1 FY27 operating cash flow turns positive, whether receivable days come back down from 63.6, the signing of the Next Generation Corvette contract, core margins holding without estimate revisions, and the timing and size of the FY27 interim dividend.
